[RECAP] What happens at a NSW GGC event? Avanade meet up + Graduate Industry Workshop

Wondering what happens at a NSW GGC meet up or industry workshop?  Here is a recap of just two of the many events that we hold throughout the year, designed to support women in STEM fields.

Meetup @ Avanade Australia: 22nd August 2012

Our last meet up was hosted by technology consulting firm Avanade Australia, who recently became official Industry GGC Ambassadors!  Girl geeks and industry professionals networked over coffee, tea and some scrumptious scones and sandwiches.  We also had an opportunity to share experiences with tech projects and a few of our attendees won some nifty gadget kits.  Lastly, we also had a chance to listen to the experiences of a current graduate.  Overall it was a great meet up – special thanks to Avanade Australia for hosting!

Industry Workshop – Graduate Interview Process: 3rd August 2012

Our latest industry workshop focused on  graduate recruitment, in particular the interview process, assessment days, and psychometric tests.  GGC Suncorp Industry Ambassador Angela Lee, Angela Lam from the Australian Computer Society and Kevin Liao, Director of YTML Consulting, led this valuable workshop.  Girl geeks who attended were encouraged to come prepared with a resume, academic transcript, and dressed in corporate attire – similar to the real thing!  Activities included a mock job interview (with opportunities for peer feedback) and mock psychometric tests (with advice on how to approach these tests).  Overall it was a great learning experience – check out what girl geek attendee and current student Hafsa Saud said:

It was an excellent experience! This event gave me a glimpse into the way interviews are conducted in the IT industry. It definitely has given me an idea of what to expect and how to prepare for interviews for internships and jobs in the future. The most valuable part of the event was the interview segment, although this segment was a bit daunting at first it was a learning experience. It allowed me to determine my weaknesses as well as the things I need to improve on to secure myself an internship or job in the future!
Thank you for organizing this event! Hope to attend more of these in the future! 🙂
We hope to hold more of these industry workshops throughout the year.
So hopefully that provides you with enough information and reasons why you should attend some of our chapter’s events in the future.  Overall it’s a chance to meet other females in STEM fields and a great opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other.
Also don’t forget to register for our next meet up which will be hosted by Microsoft Australia register your free ticket here now!
We hope to see you at a future NSW GGC event!  Until then, peace out 🙂
